How is NIT Rourkela?

I am a first year student here so I can give you the best overlay about the campus. This question appeared to me before I joined the college so expecting the question from a guy at a similar situation.

Campus: The campus is huge(approx. 1000 acres) and is the second largest college campus in India. The campus is surrounded by beautiful hills and greenery in its background. It has 3 restaurants and 4 cafes inside the campus. It has locations like backpost and sidepost which is right outside the campus serving great Maggi (Rs 20), parathas(Rs 15),etc. Food over here is not that costly. It is not difficult for South Indians and vegetarian to get good food as we have DOSAPLAZA (along with wide variety of dosas with fusions of other cuisines).

Academic Pressure: In first year, when compared to the pressure we face while getting into the college it’s 0.The only problem is with attendance (like in biology class you can make at max 4 absents otherwise you will face grade back). The teaching quality is not good when compared to your coaching teachers. Here you need to depend on yourself to complete the courses and to learn new stuffs. Labs are tough as we have regular evaluation.

Club-Culture: Being from a small town, this thing was new to me. Here you will get a lot of exposure to extra curricular activities. We have many clubs (50+) comprising of dance, drama, music, photography, social service, varieties of coding, robotics, aerospace club, vehicle designing club and many more. Apart from skills, clubs teach you time management. The one problem which most clubs face is budget issue due to which sometimes students needs to contribute.

Peer group: As most of the students come after securing decent ranks in JEE-Mains so the student quality as a whole is great. Most of the people are very down to earth, helpful and friendly. Before coming here I used to think “CS walo mei attitude hoga but they are kafi chilled out”.

Seniors: Over here there is no such barrier between seniors and juniors. We stay together and no such senior junior feeling is present. Rather seniors try to save you if you get into some trouble. They treat you like your brothers (girls aren’t treated as sister though ;) ). Seniors don’t let you pay if you go out with them so you get a lot of treats. As a whole they act like your shield.

Girls: The point all guys must be searching for. After reservation the number of girls have increased which make “hariali” more. Girls get unwanted attention due to which they have behavioral changes. Getting a girlfriend here is more tough than qualifying JEE. So if you are skillful you will get one otherwise just think “single life is best”.

P.S. I have a girlfriend 😜

Birthdays: If you have seen ‘hosteldaze’ in amazon prime you know it works. Birthdays hurt…But “GPL k bina feel bhi kaha ati hai”

City life: The main Rourkela city is about 7 kms from railway station which has constant auto services(Rs 120). Rourkela has many restaurants (about 20) and a pub too. We have our own Vaishnodevi temple which students visit as the trip includes trekking and great viewpoints.

As a whole the life in NITRKL is busy but fun. The campus is extremely disciplined due to which sometime we feel caged. NITRKL is a ragging free institute, we just have INTERACTION sessions with seniors.

One question which occurred to me when I was preparing for JEE was “Is the effort and the amount of hard work I’m putting actually worth?”-After joining the college I feel it’s totally worth it.
